Founding Attorney
Afua Bigirwa is an attorney who believes deeply in stewardship, service, and generational care. Across her work in estate planning, regulatory compliance, and business law, she brings a values-driven approach grounded in clarity, wisdom, and long-term relationship.
After more than 15 years supporting financial institutions in regulatory compliance and financial crime prevention, Afua felt called to work that touched people's lives more personally. Becoming a mother of four clarified that calling: protecting the people and responsibilities entrusted to us requires intention, preparation, and trusted guidance.
Afua founded Sycamore Law to help families and businesses build strong foundations — whether through thoughtful estate planning, strategic business formation, or navigating complex regulatory landscapes. Her practice is built on honesty, compassion, and the belief that legal planning is ultimately about caring well for what matters most.
Prior to founding Sycamore Law, Afua served as Counsel for the World Bank Group, where she advised financial institutions across the U.S., Middle East, Asia, Europe, and Africa. She also held roles at Fannie Mae, EY, Navigant Consulting, and The Bank of New York Mellon.
Afua lives in Fairfax, VA with her husband and four children. Outside of her legal work, she enjoys walking, exploring new areas with her family, and mentoring young women as they navigate life and career decisions.
Why We're Named for a Tree
The sycamore tree is known for its deep roots, its strength, and its ability to provide shade and shelter across generations. It grows wide enough to cover those beneath it and strong enough to stand through every season. To us, that's what good planning and sound counsel should do — offer protection, clarity, and stability for the people, families, and organizations who rely on it.
We built our practice around principles that mirror that symbolism — honesty, clarity, compassion, and stewardship. Whether we're guiding a family through legacy planning or helping a business navigate regulatory complexity, our goal is the same: to provide counsel that stands firm and serves well.
